5Ray Charles fused gospel with r&b to create soulAug 04, 2010
Ray Charles was one of the greatest soul/r&b artists of all time, and the most famous blind musician of all time. No other blind artist has contributed so much to the music industry with so little to start with. Ray Charles also inspired many future soul performers like Stevie Wonder, Al Green, and even Otis Redding. Ray started off as a small time blues performer in the late 40s, who was putting all his talents and time to make a name for himself so he could make a living off the only thing he stood a chance at doing, since he was blind and black, he wasn't able to get hired for most decent paying jobs. During the early/mid 50s, Ray Charles started writing his own songs, and would mainly sing gospel/blues and even a little jazz. Ray was pretty much unknown at this time, and mainly did a lot of experimenting with his songs and style. In 1959, Ray Charles produced his first billboard hit and top seller, What'd I Say, which is arguably his best and most famous original song aside from Hit the Road. Ray Charles not only made history by being the first blind performer to sell over a million records, but also helped open the gates for future soul performers, which would lead to many black singers and soul artists like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and James Brown to dominate the early 60s. Ray Charles is backed up by some of the best woman singers, who emphasize the vocals on Charle's songs with their perfect harmonies. Charles also uses so much power and emotion in his singing, and goes perfectly with his piano riffs. During the 1960s, Charles became more famous with many top hits, and covering many different varieties of music from pop, to r&b, to gospel, to soul, Ray could play it all with such professionalism and soul. He even continued to play and tour until his death in 2004, and unfortunatly, I didn't realize Charles was such a musical genius until earlier this year after first hearing What'd I Say and falling in love.

Anyways, this box set is the best collection of the musical genius I've ever seen. A good variety of his earlier gospel and blues songs are here including his rare first record, Confession Blues. Of course we also get his big hits from the 60s, which is the bulk of this collection since the second, third, and even some of the fourth CDs span Charles most successful decade. It just contains the best and most wide variety of the many genres Ray Charles covered, which helped Charles become recognized as one of the biggest names in the music industry. For a blind man, Charles could play piano better than most at the time, and could sure sing from his soul. You will not get this great variety on any single CD compilation or even on any 2 disc CD set, only a 5 disc box set can truly cover the many different styles and brilliant songs Charles performed over 6 decades, which include a few live performances. Even 5 discs constrain the career of Charles a little, but with this box set, you truly get to hear how Charles started off as a soulful blues performer, to a pop sensation in the 60s. It also contains a little history on the man, although he made many mistakes in the past, Charles did lead an interesting life, although he may have been unfaithful and made poor life decisions. Despite this, it didn't stop Charles from making history, and What'd I Say as well as Hit the Road Jack defiantly have become 2 of my all time favorite songs.

5Ray rocks from the UKApr 10, 2010
The collection was in excellent condition with the cellophane still on it. It came promptly
and I am enjoying having all of my favorite songs together. I would order from them again.
The 50th Anniversary Collection really represents the best of Ray with some inclusions that were most enlightening.

5Gotta love RayNov 07, 2009
This is a wonderful collection of Ray's music. My only complaint is that it could have been twice as many songs (and yes, I'd have paid more)! It's just so great to hear the genuis of Ray come through on the slightly country, Here We Go Again, or the fun and spritely, At The Club, the big band sound of Smack Dab In The Middle, the classic (Night Time Is) The Right Time, Spirit In The Dark (Reprise), what can I say about that performance, and who isn't be moved by America The Beautiful. I could list virtually every title in this collection and call it a 'WINNER'. Makin' Whoopee just came up as I'm writing this, and man, the groove, the soul, the rhythm, Ray's ability to take you along with him as he slides and glides, wow, it's remarkable. Ray's musicianship is simply extraordinary!

If you love Ray, no, even if you just appreciate Ray, this is a must have. If you don't know his music, well, it's high time that you too, 'discover Ray Charles'.

5ExcellentNov 02, 2008
I bought this collection mostly because I was unable to find this one song available as a download. I already had a couple of Ray's cd's. But I wanted Understanding. This collection is incredible. There are some great photos and stories in the book included. Very happy purchase

5Genius & Soul: The 50th Anniversary Collection - Ray CharlesJan 23, 2008
If you are a Ray Charles fan you will love this CD set. It includes his earlier works, favorites that everyone knows and is just a great CD. My ex-husband has our set, and I ordered my own set.
