A fascinating story, perched between history and legend, skilfully told with psychological insight and eloquence!Aug 27, 2010
I enjoyed the book immensely. Strong plot line. Dramatic situations. Taut style. All in all, a very good read. Hsi Shih is the most famous among the four legendary beauties in Chinese history. The author did a marvellous job in bringing her story to readers. It was a surprise to me that Confucius played a role in her life, adding a colorful dimension to the entire epic.
After reading the book, I understand why this woman has captured the imagination of the Chinese for more than two thousand years, and rightly so. It is no surprise that her story has been made into more than a dozen films and television series in China.
