With over 80 varieties of vegetables to choose from, eating delicious, just-picked produce is a snap. Learn every step of creating and maintaining a cornucopia of garden-fresh vegetables: from choosing and planning your plot, preparing the soil, selecting seeds or cultivating seedlings, proper watering, harvesting, and storing. From composting and mulching to caring for and harvesting vegetables, it's clear that most gardeners want to use organic methods and avoid chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
But what happens when things go wrong and organic solutions don't seem to be working? The two authors of this book have different answers to this question. Jane Courtier takes the view that organic methods are the first, best choice, but she occasionally uses chemical fertilizer and will resort to chemical pesticides if a serious problem arises. Fern Marshall Bradley writes from the viewpoint of a longtime organic gardener who's chosen never to use chemicals in her garden. Together they've created a book that looks at vegetable gardening from both points of view. There are substantive issues on both sides and in the end, it's an individual choice. Let them help you make up your own mind! | | | Features: | |

Tons of great info...Dec 30, 2009 This is an extremely informative and inventive book on growing your own vegetables and herbs. It's filled with great ideas on how to handle various soils, seasons and pests. Easy to read, beautifully done and a great reference book for the beginner or experienced gardener.

Great Gardening ResourceJul 05, 2009 I am a long time gardener who has had off and on success growing vegetables. I own many gardening books including Vegetable Gardeners Bible. I like the Reader's Digest Book the best as it has a nice format, beautiful pictures and information that other garderning books do not contain. The book covers garden planning, setup, general growing tips, harvesting and storage (no other book has covered this). Then there is a multiple page section for each vegetable that can possible be grown. I also like that there are also two points of view offered by the two authors of this this book: totally organic and the use pesticides in special cases. I paid full price for this book at a local bookstore and felt it was money well spent.

Vegetable GardeningDec 12, 2008 This is the book to have if you are just starting out in gardening. I had never planted a garden before and this book made my garden a huge success. It talks about lots of different types of gardens and then near the pack (really the last half of the book) it goes through all the different things you can plant, discusses when to plant them, how far apart to place them, how many you should plant for how many people you have in your family. It also talks about diseases and how to get rid of them. I have no complaints about this book.

For the GardenerNov 13, 2008 From doing a trial and error garden for the past two years, this book gives a lot of information for all vegetables in one book. Also going into soil preparation, the subject matter is helping in so many aspects. Would recommend to any home gardener.
